Avowed uses a different system, one thats incredibly simple and easy to understand.
As you have conversations with NPCs, certain words will be highlighted.
This, naturally, makes the game feel far more seamless.
We even saw a very early version of this mechanic inMorrowind.
Its certainly better than a codex.
